Perri LewisPerri Lewis is a journalist and editor who has worked across national newspapers and magazines. She edited the Guardian's award-winning weekend supplements, launching the successful Making Time series and constantly writes about craft for guardian.co.uk. She has also worked on the Guardian Saturday features desk, securing celebrity interviews with everyone from Hilary Mantel to Jo Brand, George Osborne to Piers Morgan.

She has always made stuff, cross stitching with her grandma as a child and sewing clothes at university, and since 2006 she has been blogging at makeanddowithperri.wordpress.com on Facebook and Twitter. Being heavily involved in the craft scene in London, she writes about trends, news, events and the people she meets (and is one fourth of the guerrilla knitting outfit Knit The City).   Whenever she can find the time she sits down and makes something.

Material World, Perri’s craft book with a difference, was bought at a hotly contest auction by Virgin Books and was published in autumn 2012.

Throw away the tea cosies, banish any thoughts of gingham: Craft just got all grown up.

Isn’t it time that making your own clothes and shoes meant your wardrobe looked more Prada than Primark? And that upcycling your furniture meant transforming your home into somewhere stylishly cool and unique and not a third-rate Good Life?

Perri Lewis is here to teach you the new rules of crafting, with interviewsand tips from some of the world’s greatest makers – Lisa Stickley, Rob Ryan and Kaffe Fassett among many more – and projects to get you started.

Friends will cajole, beg and order you to say where you bought that fantastic necklace/pair of shoes/dress. They’ll never believe it when you say you made it yourself.
